The South Swindon Parish Council project will include not just new equipment but solutions to drainage problems.
New features will include steel climbing frames, ladders, swings, a refurbished sandpit, equipment suitable for children with disabilities and a new surface.
The work at East Wichel, costing more than £80,000, is part of a wider parish policy of improving play facilities.
Parish councillor Jane Milner-Barry said: "Renovating play areas is the nicest thing about being a parish councillor!
"This one had been there for about eight years, but it was put in before the drainage problems became apparent.
"It was built in a very wet field so it has always had a terrible problem with flooding in the winter. For half the year it has not really been usable.
"There are so many young families in the area and they really need a good play area, which I hope they are going to have."
Fellow parish councillor Nadine Watts said: "It is fantastic news that the East Wichel play area is going to be refurbished, with much more play equipment and the drainage issues tackled.
"News of this work has been welcomed by local residents. The play area was poorly designed by the Borough Council when first built and it flooded during winter.
"East Wichel children deserve much better and that is why South Swindon Parish Council are doing this refurbishment. We consulted with residents to see what improvements they would like."
