A luxury Wiltshire golf course is welcoming back the English PGA Championship for 2023 – with last year’s winner returning to defend his title.

From the 17 - 20 July, Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort, which sits at the heart of the 2,000-acre Bowood Estate, is hosting the English PGA Championship for the fourth time since the competition returned to the PGA national tournament schedule in 2018 following its eight-year hiatus.

The tournament is an invitation only event welcoming the top 15 players in each PGA region, the 2022 PGA Cup team and past Ryder Cup players. After winning the tournament with 207 points last year, James Ruth of Tavistock Golf Club also returns in an attempt to retain his crown.

As well as hosting the event, the team at Bowood will be supporting its very own golf professional, Harry Brewis, who is competing in the tournament. Harry first started playing golf off a handicap of 18 and within a couple of years reduced this to 3. Harry has recently completed his PGA Training and hopes to make his colleagues proud during the three-day competition.

Spectators are welcome to support those participating with the first group teeing off Tuesday morning. Printed course maps will be available with live scoreboards located across the course — whilst The Clubhouse Bar is open for food and beverages throughout the day.

Jeff Condliffe, General Manager at Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort, said: “We are honoured to host this prestigious event for the fourth time, and welcome some of the best golfers in the UK to play on our greens. We look forward to delivering another unforgettable tournament for all involved.”

The field of 144 players compete across three rounds in a strokeplay format with only the finalists going forward after the second day to compete for a prize fund of £30,000.

Established in 1992 and set amongst 1,500 acres of glorious parkland, the Dave Thomas-designed 7,309 yard, par 72 championship course is renowned as one of the finest in Wiltshire, as well as being the official PGA Golf Course for the South West.

Jeff continued: “I’m proud of all the effort that goes into the preparation and the smooth running of the tournament from everyone at Bowood. We are equally proud to have our own golf pro, Harry, competing in the tournament, showcasing the talent and dedication that defines our team."

Alongside its golf offering, the luxury Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort includes the two AA Rosette Shelburne Restaurant, the luxurious The Spa at Bowood, and principal hotel accommodation.
