Swindon Croquet Club’s Chairman’s Plate competition came to its conclusion on Saturday.
Eight players, who had qualified from four round robin groups, competed in a knockout format.
Steve Hares, Garry Douel, Alan Chamberlain and Tony Tomlin progressed into the semi finals, having overcome quarter final opponents before Steve and Alan went through to the final.
The competition was based on the ‘advantage’ handicap system. This meant that, due to his lower handicap, Steve began the final on minus two hoops.
Alan played solidly throughout, giving Steve little opportunity to pull back the deficit. Steve did his utmost to overpower his opponent but Alan consistently played excellent, very accurate, recovery shots over several fiercely contested hoops.
Alan clinched victory with a most impressive ‘jump’ shot over one of Steve’s balls and straight through the hoop.
He was then presented with the Chairman’s Plate by competition organiser Tony Tomlin.
