Roulette has been popular for so long that it’s now part of our popular culture, featured in movies and TV shows. This means that most people now have a reasonable idea how to play the game, but the recent introduction of online and live-streamed games has led to players discovering that they can place a wider variety of wagers than they might have originally thought possible.

Straight-Up Bets (on a Single Number)

The simplest bet in roulette is where you place your chip on a single number on the betting section of the table. This wager traditionally pays out at a rate of 35 to 1, making it the biggest-paying bet in roulette. Naturally, it’s also the most difficult to predict correctly.

When looking for different versions of online casino games, you’ll see roulette titles such as Diamond Bet Roulette and Cash Collect Roulette. They all have slightly different gameplay, such as adding multipliers or jackpot prizes. These bonuses are usually linked to the straight-up bet, meaning that it retains its special place as the most important bet type.

Inside Bets

Rather than a single wager, inside bets are any bets that can be made in the inner section of the table. This is where you can find the straight-up bet and a selection of others, such as the split bet that covers two numbers and the corner bet over four numbers.

Playing online is a simple way to get used to placing these bets, as you just need to place the chip in the right spot for the bet to be highlighted, meaning that there’s no risk of getting it wrong. Several companies in and around Swindon hire roulette equipment for private functions and parties, so playing online means that you can then place your chips with confidence at one of these events.

Outside Bets and the Racetrack

The smallest wins in roulette come from the outside bets that are on the outer section of the table. These include even money bets like red, black, odd or even, where your wager covers almost exactly half the table. The presence of the zero pocket on the wheel is what edges this type of bet slightly in favour of the house, but you would expect to win approximately 50% of the time. Interestingly, flipping a coin hundreds of times doesn’t guarantee a 50% win either, according to studies.

When you play a European version of roulette, you’ll see there is a single zero, compared to American wheels with a double zero pocket. There’s also a range of extra bets in some games, located on a racetrack section. These are more complicated wagers, with names such as Voisins du Zero and Tiers du Cylindre. They each cover a selection of numbers and might require you to place several chips.

Understanding these bets lets you enjoy the timeless pleasure of roulette, no matter how you play the game. While placing a chip on a single number is a valid move, you can play more flexibly once you know all about your different options.
