Having become champions of the SW Croquet Federation Golf Croquet League, Swindon Croquet Club’s low handicap team qualified for the SW Champion of Champions knock out competition.

The Swindon team said being used to playing on the pristine, level lawns at Moredon, adjusting to the various slopes and inconsistent undulations of the Beckford lawns was challenging.

Martin Briggs remained unbeaten on the day, scoring 2 1/2 valuable points which contributed to Swindon’s slender lead by lunchtime. However, Beckford fought back strongly in the afternoon games and with one game still in play, the home team held a 1 point lead.

Having won 2 doubles games and 1 singles game, Beverly Briggs competed strongly but, despite her best efforts, was unable to overcome her opponent’s accurate clearing and hoop running, narrowly losing 5-7, resulting in a 11 - 9 victory for Beckford.

Swindon Captain Clive Smith said: "The home draw was a massive advantage for Beckford so I was proud of the determined manner in which my team approached the match. Ultimately we just fell short but, nevertheless, it was an enjoyable day of croquet as we were made very welcome and the match was played in a friendly spirit throughout."
