The History of Football and Manchester United

Football, or soccer as it's also referred to, is one of the oldest sports in the world, dating back to 206 B.C. when Chinese soldiers used Tsu'chu to assist them in their training regiment during the Han Dynasty.

Other accounts of football can be spotted in England from the 1800s. It wasn't until 1863 that the world saw the birth of the first football association in England. From then on, football spread worldwide and became one of the world's favorite sports.

Manchester United was formed during this era in 1878 and went by the name Newton Heath L&YR F.C. The club was created by railway workers who were from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The club later changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and went on to win the first English League Championship between 1907 and 1908.

The name change

Did you know that Manchester United wasn't always called Manchester United? The football club was initially called Newton Heath L&YR F.C. and later changed its name to Manchester United. Also, the name Manchester was taken from the area that it represents. They used this name because they represent the entire part of the Manchester area rather than just the city alone.

Premier League Dominance

When we think of the Premier League, we think of the Champions League picks, but did you know that Manchester leads in three different categories, including most goals, most points made, and most wins? The football club has won 13 of the 28 seasons they've played so far, which is impressive.

Let's think Treble

A treble happens when one club wins three trophies from a series of tournaments, all happening in one season. Manchester United is the first English club to win a treble. They achieved this by becoming the Premier League Championships and Champions League winners and also by winning the F.A. Cup. If we're talking about trendsetters, then we're definitely talking about Manchester United. All of this happened in 1999.

A tenth of the population are Manchester United fans

Market research carried out in 2011 showed that every one in ten people was Manchester United fan. The worldwide survey was conducted through a market research company that proved that Manchester United had over 650 million fans worldwide.

Breaking transfer records

Manchester United has officially broken the transfer record over nine times in English football history. Huge names such as Bryan Robin in 1982, Juan Sabastian Veron in 2002, and Angel Maria in 2014, to name a few. There have been game-changing transfers that have happened at Manchester United. 

Manchester United almost disappeared

In 1901 the world was experiencing a financial crisis which led to Manchester United almost getting disbanded. Harry Stanford, the club's captain, decided to walk his dog and simultaneously try to raise funds for the club in a desperate attempt. Unfortunately, Stanford lost his beloved dog and, in a panic, looked everywhere to try and find the dog. It was later found in a pub, where he eventually met a wealthy man who funded the team.

Every team has a few fun facts that make the team even more loved by those who support it. Knowing these facts is highly amazing and sometimes even shocking.
