Moredon Sporting Hub saw the installation of much-needed shelters for the carers of cyclists who are disabled and have long-term health conditions, thanks to a collaboration between Swindon Borough Council and two local companies.

Travis Perkins Managed Services (TPMS), Swindon Borough Council and property services company Ian Williams all joined forces to transform the Moredon Sporting Hub.

Moredon Sporting Hub is an important community centre that serves residents across Swindon. Operated by the Parish Council in partnership with the council, it offers facilities for cycling, football, cricket, softball and more and fitness classes to encourage residents to stay active.

The hub boasts a 1.2km closed road cycling track that is often used by adults with disabilities and long-term health conditions. The ‘Limitless Cycling’ sessions are usually staffed by colleagues from the hub and volunteers and regularly host between 30–60 users and their carers.

TPMS has a commitment in place with the council to support projects that positively contribute to the Borough and were responsible for donating shelters, which means that the carers can now have all weather comfort throughout the year. They were generously installed by their customer and local property services company Ian Williams.

Jason Smith, Account Manager for the South West at Travis Perkins Managed Services said: “The facilities at Moredon Sporting Hub offer disabled users a great way to stay active and practice cycling. These new shelters will enhance the experience for their carers and will give them year-long access.”

Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “This is a fantastic example of the benefits of social value and how it can give a great boost to community projects.

“As a council we are including social value weighting to our contracts, and it is great to see that coming to fruition through the contract we have with Travis Perkins. I’d also like to say a big thanks to the staff at Ian Williams, another of our contractors, who used their volunteering hours to make the benches and shelters.

“I know this is the first of many social value projects we will be working with Travis Perkins on to benefit local residents and I can’t wait to see them come forward.”
