Protestors gathered in Wharf Green last night (Monday 30 January) to campaign against US President Donald Trump's controversial immigration policy.

Around 40 or 50 protestors gathered holding placards that read 'Refugees Welcome' and 'Trump promotes Islamophobia and hate. Keep him out' and 'Ban Trump'.

They joined thousands who took to the streets in cities across the UK, including Bristol, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and in London. Crowds gathered just metres from the gates of Downing Street, chanting: “Shame on May.”

The Swindon protest was organised at short notice, largely via social media, throughout Monday afternoon.

The demonstrations are in response to the new President’s controversial executive order meaning that for the next 120 days, the US will not grant entry to any refugees and for 90 days, any entries from seven majority-Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – will also be suspended. On top of this the US Syrian refugee resettlement programme specifically has been suspended indefinitely.

Protestors also want the Queen's invite for a state visit by Donald Trump to be taken back.

The Swindon demonstration received the backing of the Swindon Trades Council, the People’s Assembly and other local organisations.
