Sophie Cummings will be giving a talk at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery (SM&AG), as part of the Friends of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s programme of events.
In this fascinating talk, Cummings will explore modern German art, and consider why it is responsible for some of the most interesting artists and controversial art works of the last fifty years.
By looking at important artists including Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Josef Beuys and Sigmar Polke, the audience will discover how the combination of post war politics, cold war culture and the rise of the sixties youth movements helped to shape German art.
Sophie Cummings is the Curator at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, where she works with the town’s significant collections of modern and contemporary British art. Since her appointment to the post Cummings has been integral to the development of the collection, and has created an exciting and important exhibition programme. Cummings has an MA in Art History, specialising in German painting of the 1960s and ’70s.
Berlin, Beuys and the Bader-Meinhof: A Beginner’s Guide to Modern German Art will take place at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, on Thursday 29 March, 7:30pm.
