A number of local voluntary organisations have joined forces to form Swindon Volunteers - carrying out valuable work in the community during the Covid-19 emergency.

The organisation has been helping people with various things like picking up medical prescriptions, shopping for their essentials, talking to them to provide comfort and ease their anxiety, signposting for help, providing useful information..

And over the last 6 days, Swindon Volunteers has been running the Free Meals initiative for elderly, vulnerable people, the NHS, healthcare workers and police staff, by working in partnership with local businesses.

One of those behind the initiative, Councillor Pradeep Bhardwaj explained: “These are unprecedented times. This is the biggest test we have faced in a generation – we must stand together & help each other as a community. It is so heart-warming to see so many mutual-aid groups in the communities across the length and breadth of the country and beyond, rising up to the challenge that we all face as one mankind.

Every day we cook hot meals, pack the boxes and deliver to the doorsteps of people across Swindon as far afield as Ogbourne St George, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wanborough. This has now become very popular.

“To date we have served an incredible 225 hot meals. And the work will continue as long as there are people who need these services and we have the support from our kind hearted volunteers and our partners.”
