On Monday 22 June students and staff of Isambard Community School took part in a Race for Life charity event to raise money for cancer care and research, writes Year 10 student Jessica McDonald.
Kicking off the school’s ‘Arts Blast’ week with a bang, almost everyone at Isambard gathered on the school field to take part in the sponsored event which was completed in stages all day, with year groups going out to run for an hour at a time
Despite the threat of rain, which would have made for a miserable day, every single pupil, as well as most of the teachers, took the challenge to run as many laps of the school’s field as they could, with everyone who ran three laps receiving a medal to commemorate their achievement.
Some exceeded this goal by miles, with the highest number of laps completed being nineteen from a Year 10 student. Nevertheless, everyone who partook in the race assisted the charity by being there and trying their hardest.
All participants donated £1 to Cancer Research UK, raising a total of £402 on the day. In addition there was also an online ‘Just Giving’ page, which boosted the total by another £120 to £522.
Isambard teacher and event organiser Natalie Chapman commented: “The day was a huge success, so many people took part – even a girl on crutches.”
The event was enjoyed by everybody who took part, either walking, jogging or sprinting, and, even though it took all day, the sun finally came out in the end.
Ms Chapman hopes the enthusiasm for this first event will mean it becomes part of the school calendar.
There is still a chance to help the online total grow at JustGiving
