Local social activity club, Swindon IVC, gathered on 20 June to celebrate 80 years of the national association they are affiliated to.
Prosecco flowed and cakes were consumed as part of a great afternoon tea party being marked by over 30 clubs linked to the Association of IVCs (Inter Varsity Clubs).
It was in June 1946 that two Cambridge University students decided they wanted to make their vacations as sociable as term times and founded the first IVC in London. Other towns and cities soon set up clubs of their own with Swindon joining them in October 1980 at a time when the town began a fresh wave of expansion.
Long-term member and Swindon IVC treasurer, Liz Spurry said: “The idea of IVC is a simple one. It’s a bunch of people who enjoy meeting others and doing things together. We’re self-run by volunteers and our activities are as broad as the interests of our members. These range from pub nights and meals together to outdoor activities, nights and trips out, a book club, craft circle, and short holidays – doing things we love and trying things for the first time.”
Being part of a national association brings benefits too, Liz explains. “Clubs often put on open events that members of other clubs can join in. In August we’re looking forward to members of other clubs nearby joining us for a summer BBQ and games.”
Liz said: “I think it’s brilliant that 80 years ago two people had the bright idea that has sparked so many clubs around the UK. In Swindon we’re very glad to continue a tradition of making new friends and enjoying activities together.”
