The Brunel Shopping Centre will again this year become a centre-point for remembering the fallen with the opening of the wall of remembrance on Thursday 1st November.
The wall, which will be situated opposite Eggelicious in The Crossing, will start as a blank canvas on the 1st and over the following 10 days members of the public will be encouraged to leave their own messages and designs of remembrance until Remembrance Day on Sunday 11 November.
Also from the 1st until the 5th November, visitors to the town centre will also be able to see the Tommy statue in The Brunel. Currently touring the town, this six-foot aluminium silhouette of a First World War Tommy marks the centenary of the end of the First World War and, as part of the ‘There But Not There’ campaign led by the charity Remembered will help raise funds for a number of armed forces charities.
Swindon Stitch and Bitch have also made hanging baskets of poppies which will be displayed in Havelock Square. The group will also be conducting a Poppy Rock Painting Workshop on Saturday 3rd November between 11am and 4pm in The Arcade near Boswell’s Café.
Jane Stewart, Acting Centre Manager for The Brunel, said: “Our wall of remembrance has become a focal point in the centre in the past years and always attracts some beautiful and poignant messages, as well as artwork and just being a place to come and reflect for a while.
“We’re very lucky to have been chosen to have the iconic and haunting Tommy statue for the first days of November as well as having Swindon Stitch and Bitch come back again this year.”
