NAMES FROM THE PAST
by Nick Digbv
Many of the names now familiar
to us in West Swindon date back
many hundreds of years, and will
have been understood by resi-
dence back as far as Domesday
or beyond. One of the oldest is
Shaw or 'Scaega' as the Saxons
wrote it. Names like Toothill,
Blagrove and Mannington are
probably equally old. Toothill
has not even changes its spelling,
so the medieval village that lay
there would have gone by the
same name. Freshbrook is named
after the stream that runs down
the valley to the River Key. The
other names such as Westlea,
Ramleaze and Middleleaze are
derived from the medieval field
names. The 'lea' or 'leaze' means
pasture or meadow.
Even West Swindon can be
found in records dating back to
the 13th century, but instead of
referripg to the area we know as
West Swindon today, it was
applied to the west half of the
parish of Swindon around the
Kingshill and Okus area. It made
up one of two manors in Swindon
Parish.
While the maps may now look
radically different in terms of
features, the names are the same
as have been used for a thousand
years. You may well find familiar
local names on this map of 1773
even if the spelling is a little
different! Can you follow the line of the 01(1 London to Bristol Road (the old .-142())tro,,, 1/ails Mill (Woollon Bassett
