We’ve just passed the halfway stage of the year, but 2025 has already delivered a string of unforgettable sporting moments across golf, football, tennis, boxing and the NFL.

And for punters, it’s been just as lively—with the best free bets UK bookmakers have to offer adding extra excitement to every upset and underdog story.

With that said, here’s a look at the biggest sporting stories of the year so far.

Super Bowl LIX: Philadelphia Eagles get revenge on the Kansas City Chiefs

In February, the Philadelphia Eagles delivered a statement win to avenge their 2023 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs—running out 40-22 winners at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was named MVP after throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while Phillies’ defence stifled Patrick Mahomes—who was sacked six times and intercepted twice.

It marked the Eagles’ second Super Bowl title and ended the Chiefs’ bid to become history-makers as back-to-back-to-back champions.

Rory McIlroy finally wins the Masters

Fast forward to April, Rory McIlroy completed one of the most emotionally charged journeys in modern golf by winning the Masters at Augusta National.

After 10 years of near-misses, the Northern Irishman finally completed the career Grand Slam, becoming just the sixth man in history to do so.

McIlroy teed off on the Sunday as the leader, but after a topsy-turvy round, held his nerve to beat Englishman Justin Rose in a dramatic playoff.

Chris Eubank Jr defeats Conor Benn in grudge match

More than three decades after their fathers’ fierce rivalry, Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn finally met in the ring on April 26 in a long-anticipated bout that captured the attention of the nation.

In front of a sold-out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Eubank Jr claimed a unanimous decision win (116-112 on all cards).

It was Benn’s first professional defeat in 24 bouts, with Eubank Jr’s experience and well-timed jab perhaps giving him the upper hand against his old rival.

Crystal Palace win first-ever major trophy

On May 17, Crystal Palace stunned the football world by beating Manchester City to lift the FA Cup—the London club’s first trophy in their 119-year history.

A well-worked team move was finished in emphatic fashion by Eberechi Eze midway through the first half, and the Eagles defended superbly to hold off relentless City pressure.

Palace’s win, which was masterminded perfectly by manager Oliver Glasner, is one of the great Wembley upsets—and his side secure European football as a result.

PSG claim first Champions League title in style

Paris Saint-Germain finally ended their long wait for European glory with a record-breaking 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final at the end of May.

The French champions were irresistible from the first whistle at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, with Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue giving the Parisians a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

20-year-old sensation Doue scored again to make it three in the second half, followed by goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu to round off the rout.

Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner in French Open classic

Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his French Open title in early June in what many fans and pundits alike are calling the greatest final the iconic Roland-Garros has ever seen.

The Spaniard came from behind to defeat World No.1 Jannik Sinner 6–7, 6–3, 3–6, 7–6, 7–5after over five gruelling hours of play.

As well as coming back from two sets down, Alcaraz saved three championship points in the fourth set and battled to take control in the decider.
