Council’s town centre regeneration plans to be showcased

Swindon Borough Council’s plans for regenerating the town centre will be on display in the Central Library from 20-23 July, giving residents a look at the future of the town as well as updates on projects which are currently underway.

Developments such as Aspen House, North Star and the Carriage Works form part of the Council’s £500 million programme of investment into Swindon’s town centre in a bid to promote the town as a modern and prosperous place to live, work and visit.

Displays of the plans will be in place on the ground floor of the Central Library from Thursday 20 July to Sunday 23 July during the library’s normal opening hours. On the Thursday and Friday, members of the public will also be given the opportunity to speak to experts about the plans and learn more about development opportunities. 

A detailed model of the town centre will be on display to help visualise what the future of the town may look like.

The town centre development is predicted to generate 10,000 new jobs and 1,000 new homes, which will help to accommodate Swindon’s projected population growth of 25% over the next 20 years.

These plans contribute to the Council’s vision for the town to have all the positive characteristics of a British city by 2030, including a low-carbon environment, compelling cultural, retail and leisure opportunities, excellent infrastructure and well-managed housing growth in order to support existing and new communities.

Swindon is the UK’s seventh most investable town or city and is one of the UK’s fastest growing towns. The Council’s plans for redevelopment aim to build on this success, as well as the town’s prime location and great transport links, in order to promote the town as a desirable place to work and live. 

Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: ‘We have some really ambitious plans for the town centre which we are really keen to share with the residents of Swindon.

“I think this is a fantastic opportunity for people to come along and speak to the staff who are actually doing the work and ask any questions they might have. The projects on display are very exciting and show the ambition we have for the town.
