Swindon Borough Council's Adult Community Learning (ACL) programme provides more than 100 free courses to adult learners in Swindon, enrolling more than 750 eligible learners, in 40 locations a year.
They offer opportunities for residents to gain new skills or to help residents prepare to return to work. These courses include basic educational courses, such as Maths and English, including English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), to arts and crafts, cooking, finding employment and helping children with homework.
Jordan, who took part in one of the ACL cooking courses, said;” I have found the cooking courses really great. I was referred to the courses by the Council's Live Well Team and being here has helped me and my family to eat healthier. It’s also helped me to get out of the house, as I had bad social anxiety but I have been able to make new friends”.
Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education has encouraged residents to enrol.
“The courses offered by our Adult Community Learning team provide our residents with the opportunity to gain additional qualifications they may not have completed during their schooling. This helps to improve their health and wellbeing, build positive relationships and develop basic skills including upcycling and basic cooking classes for healthy eating.
“By helping our residents to be more independent, happier and heather in completing these courses, we are helping to achieve our mission to build a fairer Swindon for all”.
