More than 550 children across Swindon are set to receive a brand-new bedtime story, as part of an exciting school’s project from local author Kate Claxton and The Festival of Tomorrow.

The Bedtime Story Experiment, which begins its tour of primary schools in February, combines storytelling with simple science themes to spark curiosity, creativity and a love of reading. The project aims to highlight the importance of bedtime stories while encouraging children to have fun with books beyond sitting silently and reading ‘because they have to’.

Delivered by Kate Claxton and centred around her latest book The Good Ship Bed, the workshops will end with each child taking home their own new book to continue a relaxing bedtime routine at home. The free books have been made possible thanks to generous sponsorship from Swindon Travel Hub, alongside additional contributions from the National Literacy Trust.

Kate said: “This is about more than giving away books. It’s about opening doors to imagination, encouraging reading as part of a relaxing routine and helping children see stories as something exciting. Being able to do this during the Year of Reading makes it even more special.”

Swindon Travel Hub, an independent travel agency based in Old Town Swindon, has played a key role in sponsoring the initiative, demonstrating the power of local businesses to create positive community impact.

Swindon Travel Hub co-owner Shaun Jones said: “We’re really honoured to be able to place books directly into the hands of children in our community. The books being shared are full of adventure and travel themes, something we’re really passionate about helping families access. Encouraging reading at a young age benefits everyone and we are delighted to be part of something that inspires the next generation.”

Support from The National Literacy Trust has further strengthened the project, aligning with its mission to improve literacy levels and promote equal access to reading resources for children from all backgrounds across Swindon.

The Bedtime Story Experiment forms part of a wider programme of events during The Festival of Tomorrow, an action-packed exploration of science, innovation and the arts across Swindon throughout February.

Participating schools can access a range of workshops, shows and challenges for free and any schools not already involved are encouraged to sign up on the Festival of Tomorrow website for future opportunities.
