Pupils from Poland had a taste of life in a Swindon secondary school when a group of 56 aged 13 and 14 visited Lawn Manor Academy in Swindon.

The visit was led by the school’s Welcome Ambassador, who helped them discover the differences between the two education systems.
The visit gave the Polish pupils an opportunity to drop into lessons, explore the school and spend time with Lawn Manor students, with 43 Welcome Ambassadors volunteering to help make the visit a memorable and welcoming experience.
Lawn Manor’s Welcome Ambassadors are pupils who volunteer to represent the school and welcome visitors, from prospective pupils and their families to international guests.
They play an important role in helping visitors feel included and giving them an insight into life at the academy, as well as helping host the school’s annual Celebration of Welcomes and Cultural Day events.
During the visit, the Polish pupils were given a tour of the school, sampled a variety of lessons and enjoyed time relaxing with Lawn Manor pupils over board games in the library.
The highlight of the visit was a special music and dance performance, featuring musicians and dancers from the school who had chosen their own songs and choreographed their own routines.
Year 10 pupils Tilly and Lydia were among the Welcome Ambassadors who took part in the visit. Lydia, who also played bass guitar in the music and dance showcase, said: “It was interesting showing them the classrooms and what it’s like to be at school in the UK.
"We found out there were quite a few differences in the subjects they learn compared with us, and they were surprised that we all wear a uniform.
“I wish schools in the UK didn’t have uniform and had a shorter school day, like in Poland!”
Tilly has been a Welcome Ambassador since Year 9, a role that develops as pupils progress through the school.
She said: “Each year you get to do more things and take on bigger roles. It’s cool to show people around, welcome them and make them feel included.”
Next year, pupils from Lawn Manor, including Lydia, will make the return visit to Poland to get a taste of life in a Polish school.
Russell Langdown, Headteacher at Lawn Manor Academy, said: “We’re very proud of the welcoming and inclusive environment here at Lawn Manor and we think it’s incredibly important to embrace and celebrate what makes us different, as well as giving our pupils an international perspective on learning and life.
"By giving our pupils the opportunity to spend time with their Polish peers, they can expand their outlook and see different perspectives, all things that will benefit them as they go through life.”
Lawn Manor Academy is part of the Ascend Learning Trust, and people can find out more about the school at www.lawnmanor.org
