Six months on from the Grenfell fire, Swindon People's Assembly (SPA) are hosting a communal event to remember the lives lost and victims effected by the fire.

Swindon residents are invited to join Swindon People's Assembly at the Cenotaph on 14 December from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

In a statement, SPA said: "Six months after the Grenfell fire killed seventy one people, we are gathering here in Swindon, to remember the lives that were lost on that dreadful night, because we realise that though this awful event happened a hundred miles away in London, it could just as easily have been in any other town or city across the country including our own and because we want to show solidarity with the people living with the effects of the Grenfell fire, to support them in their campaign for justice.

"The Grenfell fire was so catastrophic because of the dangerous materials used during refurbishment and the lack of sprinklers in the building. It was a disaster waiting to happen and there are many more high rise buildings across the UK that are in similar condition. The concerns of residents at Grenfell were raised with the Council and Management Company over a number of years prior to the fire that claimed so many lives, but no action was taken.

"Seventy one people, men, women and children have died and still the Government does virtually nothing to prevent the same happening in other locations or even rehouse those made homeless by the disaster.

"Residents warned the tower block remained a fire risk. In a further blog posting in November 2016, the action group stated it believed "only a catastrophic event" would bring an end to the dangerous living conditions at the tower block."
