The Wroughton and District Gardeners’ Society is celebrating its 80th year by adding a new bake-off section to its village show.

This year the group wants to encourage as many people as possible to enter the show and help represent everything that is great about home-growing food.

The new ‘Bake-off’ feature, inspired by the BBC TV programme, will include a show stopper class. Other classes at the show will range from fruit and vegetables, chutneys and cakes to hand crafts and photographs.

Society chair Jess Bailey said: "It’s amazing to see the group flourishing with our largest ever membership in our special 80th year.

"If you have a family favourite recipe for jam or chutney, why not give it a go and enter into the show? Come along and see the ‘best in show’ entries and get inspired to have a go yourself.

"There’s even a selection of novice classes for anyone that wants to have a go. Theres a chance to win a certificate for first, second and third places in each class.

‘We also have well attended talks each month with a variety of speakers including a celebrity speaker."

The society aims to fill the Ellendune Commnuity centre in Wroughton with entries featuring a vast range of colours and textures. The group often has to add additional tables outside to be able to showcase each entry in the best possible way. The heaviest pumpkins and largest marrows need to be displayed at the door as they are too heavy to get inside.

Committee member Molly Western said: "We’re going from strength to strength as a local group with membership increasing each year as well."

The show takes place on Saturday 21 September from 2pm to 4.30pm, with prizegiving at 4pm. All exhibits should be placed between 8am and 11am. Entries should be submitted by Wednesday 18 September.
