Stourhead is celebrating the 20th anniversary of iconic Pride & Prejudice blockbuster by inviting visitors to explore the setting of the famous first proposal scene, and see costumes from the film on display in Stourhead house.

The 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, was filmed at two locations in the world-famous landscape garden at Stourhead – the Palladian Bridge and the Temple of Apollo.

Visitors who are fans of the movie can relive these key moments, where Elizabeth Bennet once raced across the Palladian Bridge in the pouring rain and found shelter at the Temple of Apollo, only to receive an awkward first proposal from Mr Darcy. Inside Stourhead house, the original costume worn by Mr Darcy, and a replica costume worn by Elizabeth Bennet is on display in the Italian Room until 2 November.

With a new Netflix adaptation of Pride and Prejudice currently in production, interest in Jane Austen’s timeless story is once again on the rise.

Elizabeth Ogilvie, Senior Visitor Experience Officer, said: “Stourhead continues to captivate Jane Austen fans from across the world, even 20 years on from the film. Visitors can stand exactly where Lizzie stood at the Temple of Apollo and feel the story come to life. It’s a special place for a lot of people. We look forward to welcoming visitors who want to step into the world of Pride and Prejudice and see this amazing film location up close.”

Visitors who are looking to mark their visit with a special memento can purchase a Pride and Prejudice pin badge, which are available for a recommended donation of £4 from visitor reception. Inside Stourhead’s shop, a Jane Austen display table contains everything from figurines to jewellery inspired by the famous author.

The National Trust cares for many places that are featured in TV and film adaptations. To discover more about this film, why Stourhead was chosen and how the shots were achieved, as well as visiting other places that have been on screen, you can purchase the National Trust On Screen book, available online or at Stourhead’s shop.

Stourhead is open daily until 2 November. For more information, visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead
