Smooth sailing ahead for Wichelstowe canal

A well-trodden stretch of canal towpath in Wichelstowe is set for a much-needed makeover, thanks to funding that will help resurface and widen the popular route.

The 100-metre section, running from the edge of the Wichelstowe development through to Beavans Bridge, has long been a key route for walkers, joggers and local schoolchildren. Originally rebuilt by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust (WBCT) more than 20 years ago as part of a millennium project, the path has become increasingly worn over time. In winter, it regularly turns into a muddy and waterlogged obstacle course, making access difficult for the local community.

Now, with a £3,000 donation from Barratt Homes Bristol and Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, WBCT can make vital improvements, ensuring the path remains safe and accessible.

Chloe Ford, Swindon Branch Chair and Head of Communications for WBCT, said: “We established a temporary works compound near the site last year, allowing us to store materials and machinery needed for this work. With funding now in place, we can finally upgrade the path, improving access for the community and allowing more to safely enjoy this blue and green natural corridor.”

Work will begin soon with hopes of completion before summer. The towpath’s new surface will bring it in line with surrounding pathways, many of which were improved as part of the wider Wichelstowe development. With rising costs and ongoing financial pressures, donations like this are more important than ever for WBCT, which relies entirely on business support, grants, and fundraising.

Chloe said: “2024 was an extremely difficult year, and 2025 looks just as challenging. These generous contributions will go directly towards improving access and ensuring the community can continue to enjoy this free and scenic route for years to come.”

All materials and equipment for the project will be sourced locally where possible, further supporting businesses in the area.

The towpath will close while improvement work is underway and signage will direct pedestrians to a diversion via Peglars Way to Beavans Bridge.

The Wichelstowe development is being built by Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes in partnership with Swindon Borough Council which will deliver 3,000 new homes along with new schools and community facilities over 20 years. The 250-hectare site on the southern edge of Swindon will include extensive open spaces, nature conservation areas, playing pitches and allotments.

As part of this neighbourhood residents can enjoy 12km of new nature trails, play areas, 200 acres of open space and walks along the Wilts and Berks canal. There’s also a range of schools for children of all ages within easy reach.  Junction 16 of the M4 and Swindon train station are both within a ten-minute drive, providing easy access to Bristol and London.

Barratt David Wilson Homes South West will launch a new phase at Canalside in spring 2025 and potential buyers can register via the website.

More details about other new homes at Wichelstowe can be found at Orchards Rise,  Orchards View and Wichel Fields.
