Police officers were called to reports of disturbance at the Deer's Leap pub in Penhill in the early hours of yesterday morning , where a man was seen and heard breaking windows.

David Mundy, 30, from Booth House, Spring Close, Swindon, was arrested near to the scene soon afterwards but assaulted three officers while being detained.

He kicked one officer in the head, luckily not causing any injury, and then spat at two others before being taken away to custody.

Today, he pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting a police officer and one of criminal damage and was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison.  He was also ordered to pay £100 to the officer he kicked and £50 to each officer he spat at.

Inspector Carly Nesbitt said:  "This is a good, positive and quick result to what is a serious crime.
"Not only has this man's actions impacted on a couple's business, forcing them to close for a while, he also assaulted three of our officers who were just doing their job.

"The result reflects the seriousness of this case as it is totally unacceptable for any member of the police service to be subjected to any type of assault - be it physical or verbal. Our officers are there to protect the public and prevent crime and don't deserve any form of abuse."
