Following a small fire at the waste depot in Cheney Manor industrial estate on 17 October, an investigation into the cause of the fire has been completed.

After inspecting the site, the fire service believes there was some metal material mixed in with the plastic recycling which ignited and caused the fire.

A spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council said: “While we’re unable to confirm if this metal was a battery, it’s important to state that batteries should not be put in with your recycling waste.”

Most large supermarkets have a battery recycling collection point in store where you can recycle your used batteries. Alternatively, you can take your household batteries or vehicle batteries to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) where they will be recycled separately.

Please do not put any form of battery, whether it’s an AAA or a laptop battery, into your kerbside recycling.
