Swindon Borough Council Conservatives have responded to the Autumn Budget announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

They have voiced disappointment, saying the Budget did not provide the substantial support required to address the severe financial pressures facing local authorities like Swindon Borough Council.

While the announced business rates relief for smaller high street businesses, a £100 Household Energy Payment for households in council tax bands A-D, and a small rise in minimum wages for young workers will be welcomed by many residents during a difficult period, the party says, this Budget raises serious questions about the long-term sustainability of local government finance.

The Conservative Group highlighted that Swindon Borough Council continues to face significant challenges, including the ongoing programme to improve Children's Services, increasing demand for special educational needs provision and restoring stability to the Council’s finances.

Cllr Gary Sumner, the Conservative Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “Britain needs a Government that will take the tough decisions required to get the country living within its means, just like we’re having to make difficult choices here in Swindon.

“The right way isn’t to increase borrowing and make future generations foot the bill. The right way is to bring down spending and grow the economy.

"That’s why my Conservative administration is determined to close a substantial financial hole inherited from the previous Labour administration, take a pro-business approach, support job creation, while protecting the services our residents rely on. But Government must play its part in supporting our improvement journey.

“We will continue to make the case for Swindon and press Ministers to deliver the support and investment that our borough needs."

Cllr Keith Williams, Cabinet Member for Finance, Recovery and Transformation, said: "Without a sustainable settlement for local government, our council is left trying to balance rising demand against limited resources.

"That is not fair on residents, council taxpayers or the vulnerable people who need our services. Residents rightly expect Government to address the growing funding gap to enable councils to deliver essential services.”

The Conservative Group also noted the Chancellor's commitment to greater devolution and powers for local leaders, but said this must be accompanied by adequate funding if councils are to deliver meaningful outcomes for residents.
