Swindon Borough Council is to hear a proposal that a regular programme of inspection and cleaning of the town's Cenotaph be put in place.
The Labour & Co-operative councillors making the proposal say such a programme would ensure the memorial was cared for all year round and not only in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.
The Cenotaph stands in the heart of the town and is the focus of the annual Remembrance Sunday service and other civic and military events.
The councillors say a number of complaints were raised by residents a few months ago about the condition of the Cenotaph and as a result, a group of Labour went out in their own time to scrub it clean.
The motion, proposed by Cllr Mike Davies of Badbury Park, Eldene and Liden ward, asks the Council to establish a regular programme for inspecting and cleaning the Cenotaph and its immediate surroundings throughout the year.
Where necessary, the motion says, the council should seek specialist advice on the ways in which the Cenotaph can be cleaned while maintaining its condition and then monitor the Cenotaph's condition throughout the year.
Cllr Mike Davies said: “Swindon's Cenotaph is where we remember the people from our town who lost their lives in conflict.
"It should look right every day of the year, not only before Remembrance Sunday.
"This is about respect and it is only right that a regular programme of care is established and the right expertise to protect the monument sought.”
