Swindon Borough Council is being called on to introduce a safe and cost-neutral scheme to allow residents without off-street parking to charge electric vehicles from their homes.
A motion to the Full Council meeting on Thursday 22 October proposed by Conservative councillor Daniel Adams and seconded by fellow Conservative Cllr Marco Di Pinto, seeks to develop a policy for regulated cross-pavement charging conduits.
These conduits, the councillors say, would enable households to safely route charging cables beneath pavements to vehicles parked at the kerb, ensuring fairness for residents.
Cllr Daniel Adams said: “We believe in fairness and that residents should not be forced to choose between unsafe charging arrangements and giving up on owning an electric vehicle altogether.
"Currently, some residents have little option but to trail charging cables across public footways, creating potential hazards for pedestrians.
"Whether somebody chooses an electric vehicle for environmental reasons, lower running costs or both, they should be able to charge it safely at home where appropriate."
Cllr Di Pinto said: "This proposal is sensible, cost-neutral and focuses on delivering real benefits for local people.
"It supports our vision of a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Swindon, while helping residents to reduce their fuel costs.”
