Halifax pays off mortgage for lucky Swindon couple

A Swindon couple were counting their lucky stars earlier this month when they found out they were the winners of the Halifax Mortgage Prize Draw and saw their £95,000 mortgage paid off overnight. 

Nikki, 41, a customer assistant at Sainsbury’s, and her husband David, 39, had bought their home through Halifax just 11 months ago and, having entered the bank’s Mortgage Prize Draw, have had their mortgage paid off on their three-bedroom terraced home in full.

Nikki and David were relaxing after work when Halifax Mortgage Advisor Simon Lawrence called to give them the life changing news: “We simply couldn’t believe what we were hearing and the amount we’ll now be able to save every month. Never in our lives did we think we would be mortgage free so soon!”

The couple are already reinvesting the money they were using for their monthly repayments into renovating their home, and are excited to be able to start work on a new drive and have begun replacing the flooring in their lounge.

The Halifax draw now occurs monthly, with one lucky homeowner becoming mortgage-free, and 100 people winning a cash prize of £1,000.

Simon Lawrence, Mortgage Adviser at Halifax in Chippenham, said: “It was absolutely brilliant to be able to tell Nikki and David that they’d won the Halifax Mortgage Prize Draw, meaning that their entire mortgage was being paid off and the money that would usually go on their monthly payments would be freed up to give them extra cash to invest in their home.

“For most homeowners, your mortgage is often the single biggest financial commitment you have each month and to so to be able to reward our customers in this way is just fantastic, particularly when, like Nikki and David, the money that would otherwise be used for the monthly repayments can be put to great use elsewhere.”

Nikki and David’s win comes at a good time, with data from Halifax finding the average mortgage in Swindon has increased 29% in just five years, to over £173,000. House prices across the same period have soared 24% to over £200,000.

Customers can register online at Halifax.co.uk or in person at a Halifax branch. To be eligible for the monthly prize draw customers must:

• Have registered to take part.
• Have a Halifax mortgage on their home in England, Wales or Scotland.
• Hold an existing Halifax or Bank of Scotland personal retail current account and have paid at least £1,500 into it the month before the draw.
• If you hold more than one eligible mortgage account, we will pay off the one with the highest balance, up to £300,000.
