Swindon Borough Council have partnered with SSE Enterprise Contracting (SSE) to convert 28k street lights to LED lanterns which will consume less energy, reduce light pollution and save almost £800k each year.
By mid-March 2021, lanterns on more than 9,500 lighting columns had been upgraded.
From mid-March 2021 in to April, SSE will not only focus on replacing lanterns and columns at the end of their service life but also work to strengthen columns by fitting a metal sleeve at the top of the column alongside residential roads, foot and cycle paths.
SBC are due to start work in residential parking zones in the Eastcott and Old Town areas, which include replacing columns and/or sleeving work. Their Contractor will need significant space either side of a column to accommodate the vehicles required to remove and replace the column. In order to help this work be completed, SSE will request several vehicles are moved from in front of and either side of the column where it has been clearly identified which columns are to be replaced. Following installation there will be a slight delay before the lights are dimmed. If lights in your road have not been dimmed after 10 days, please report it on the council's website.
Why are the lights in my road left day burning?
Swindon has a number of street lights controlled by a master unit and, in some unavoidable situations, lights may be left day burning for a few days while the equipment is being updated. While we appreciate this appears counter-productive in a project to save energy, the Council will not pay any more for the additional energy used.
You can read FAQs about the scheme on the council's website.
