So far this year over 800 Swindon households have registered an interest in Solar Together.

The initiative helps residents find a trustworthy solar panel installer and get a competitive price for an installation.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "Installing solar panels lets you use free, renewable, low carbon electricity. You can also sell surplus electricity to the National Grid or store it for later use."

Ian, who lives in Wiltshire, had 16 panels installed through the scheme last year. He said: “We now charge our electric car for free.

"We have no problem using the tumble dryer and also keeping the house warm because the saving on electricity outweighs the extra cost of gas for heating the house.”

People can register an interest for free on the Solar Together website by 9 August, with no obligation to continue further. They can also read the answers to commons questions to consider if installing solar panels is right for you.
