The Stratton, Central Swindon North and West Swindon Neighbourhood Policing Team joined forces with Swindon Borough Council to visit 15 licensed convenience stores.
Each store was checked against criteria including licensing and health and safety legislation, and a number of violations were found throughout the day.
They ranged from minor issues to more serious ones, and the police have announced plans for follow-up action where required.
PC Andy Deller, who lead the operation, said: “The findings from some of the stores demonstrate the importance of these joint operations.
"There were some surprising and concerning results. Not only did it give the opportunity to make sure that the stores were operating legally and safely, but also to educate the owner if required so that they can make the required changes and don’t fall foul of the same mistakes again."
