A road repair backlog of an estimated £50m has been announced by Swindon Borough Council.

A spokesperson said: “In an ideal world, every local authority would have the resources to keep roads free from defects. But over recent decades, the funding councils receive from central government for preventative road maintenance has significantly reduced.

“This means the borough has an estimated backlog of highways maintenance and repairs worth approximately £50m. The national backlog for England and Wales is estimated at £17bn.

This financial year the council have a road maintenance budget of £5.75m. In October they used some of this funding to:

  • resurface and patch 43 roads and footpaths
  • fill 650 potholes
  • refresh road markings in 55 areas around the Borough
  • clear more than 660 gullies
  • repair more than 110 kerbs and pieces of street furniture (bollards, signs, etc.)

A spokesperson said: “We’re on track to do more work in 2025 than we did in 2024, thanks to the additional funding which is allowing us to allocate more resources to tackle our historic backlog. While our inspectors regularly survey road conditions, we also rely on your reports to make us aware of where work is needed.”
