Members of the public have leant a green-thumbed hand to the Wroughton Parish Council, at its most recent secret garden play area planting event.
Local volunteers joined Wroughton Parish Council's Community Project and Grants Officer, Amanda Woodhead, for a tree and shrub planting session at the village's new and improved secret garden play area.
Amongst the volunteers braving the chilly November air were local gardening enthusiasts, Joan Oarman, and Jane Lane.
Located opposite a public footpath sign, off of Boness Road, the secret garden play area contains newly-planted trees, a rockery, a play park area with equipment made from sustainable hardwood, and benches made from the same sustainable wood material.
Amanda Woodhead said: “We’re really delighted that members of the public have come along to help us with our planting here at the secret garden play area.
“This planting scheme includes trees and plants that are all native species to the UK. All the planting is being funded by Swindon Borough Council’s community forest project, and was started earlier this month.
“With the help of Green Planet Gardening, we’ve been planting orchard trees, other trees and shrubs, swathes of native bulbs, and we will also be putting some wildflower plants in after Christmas.
“We’re really pleased how it’s all come together so far, and we’ve also had two benches funded by Richard James which have been made out of sustainable hardwood.
“We look forward to people coming to visit this space - especially as the plants establish over time. There’s plenty of room for everybody, and something for everyone to enjoy."
Attending this event alongside the volunteers, was Lee Sheppard from the aforementioned local gardening business, Green Planet Gardening.
Lee explained: “I’ve been sub-contracted to work on this play area by Keith Mills from Southern Forestry, and have been helping with the planting here. A team including myself and three other men visited the park last week to make a start on the tree planting, shrub planting, grass-seeding, and the mulch.
“A mix of native UK trees have been planted so far. We’ve got a fruit tree section over by the rockery, and the rest of the park space is made up of a mix of native trees. This mix includes Acers, Sorbus trees, Dogwood and Spindle.
“Some native bulb planting has also been started, and some daffodils and snowdrops have been placed in the beds towards the back of the play area."
