People passing Peatmoor Lagoon have been staring in ‘turtle’ amazement at a pair of residents who have emerged from the murky depths to bask in the soaring temperatures.

It seems that the twin turtles have been causing quite a stir among regular users of the path that runs beside the picturesque lagoon, with many parents taking their children home from nearby Peatmoor Community Primary School stopping to catch a glimpse of the elusive reptilian residents.

One of the elusive turtles basks in the sunshine at Peatmoor Lagoon - can you see it?

Various theories circulate about how the unusual pair first took up residence in the semi-circular concrete weir beside the lagoon - with some speculating that they could have been abandoned or are pets that have made a (not so) quick getaway.

Ducks seem uncertain about their new neighbours

But most seem to agree that the turtles have been living in the area for at least three years, emerging from their Winter hibernation when the temperatures begin to rise.

Seemingly unbothered by the gaggles of geese and herds of swans - and with a lifespan of between 10 - 80 years it seems certain that we may expect to see a regular return of the pair for many years to come.

We have been seeing them for at least four years, you’re a little late to the Ninja Turtle party. Allegedly there is rumoured to be a third in the lake itself though my wife and I yet to see this mythical beast.
