White Lodge Care Home worker Hamzat Lawal has been crowned Learner of the Year for the Central West Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2026.
Hamzat is now through to the national round of judging.
The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 14,000 residents living in Barchester’s 271 care homes and private hospitals across the country, which includes White Lodge Care Home in Braydon.
Categories range fromRegistered Nurse of the Year and Carer of the Year to Dementia Care Champion and Activities Coordinator of the Year.
Almost 6,000 nominations were received from homes and hospitals across the UK.
Hamzat said: “This is a feeling beyond excitement. Coming top learner in the Central west division, has been so exciting for me.
"It’s been so amazing to be selected top learner out of so many talented and super ambitious carers in our region. Special thanks to all my colleagues and management for making feel so special."
As the winner for Central West, Hamzat Lawal is through to the national finals in which the overall winner is decided.
They will join winners from across the UK at a special awards event in October to celebrate their outstanding achievements and discover if they have won a national award.
Care home General Manager Ramona Gherendi said: “This is an amazing achievement and the whole home is supporting Hamzat Lawal. We are so proud of him.
"Hamzy fully deserve this recognition for his outstanding commitment and the positive impact he has on residents, families and colleagues.
