On 2ndJuly, New College Swindon will be opening its doors up to Year 10 and 11 students for their annual Twilight experience. Running from 4:30pm – 7pm, the event gives young people the chance to visit New College and participate in taster sessions to see what studying there is like. Sessions take place after the school day has finished, giving students plenty of time to get there. There will also be a special information talk for parents to attend and staff will be on hand to provide information, advice and guidance.

The event is mainly for Year 10 pupils from schools with sixth forms, who will not have the opportunity to take part in the daytime College Experience. However, Year 11 pupils, who may not be completely sure where they want to study after GCSEs are also welcome, as well as Year 9s who are being home-schooled.There will be other chances to visit New College at open events during Year 11, but only Twilight will give students an idea of what teaching and learning will be like there.

Twilight is a great opportunity to experience subjects not on offer at other school 6th forms. Current New College students will also be around to answer any questions and speak about College life. Some students enjoy the familiar environment of staying in a sixth form, but others prefer a wider choice of courses, opportunities and independence that College can offer. Twilight can be helpful for students who are struggling to make a decision about which path to choose.

There are a range of taster subjects to choose from, including Media Make-up, Photography, Business, Journalism, Psychology, Geography, Chemistry, Maths and many more. When applying for the evening, students choose five options which they would like to sample; and on the day will be allocated two of these subjects. The closing date to apply is Wednesday 27 June.

Amanda Walton, Head of Marketing and Customer Services said: “We have been running this event for four years now.  It provides an essential opportunity for Year 10 and 11 pupils to visit New College after school hours and experience taster sessions to see what life here is about. Often, pupils just don’t realise how many A Level and vocational subjects we offer that they cannot access at school. For some, it’s the only opportunity they will have to engage with College.  It’s a great event and we have a good uptake.”
