A report on the future of the former Highworth golf course, scheduled for consideration by Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet on 1 July, will now be considered at a later date.

The item was originally included in the council’s Forward Plan earlier this year, following previous Cabinet discussions.

At that time, the council’s Cabinet agreed to explore an option for a housing-led scheme on part of the site, with the potential to deliver up to 700 homes, including a proportion of affordable housing.

Following the recent local elections, the new Cabinet wishes to explore all options for the site so it contributes to its wider priorities.

A further report on the future use of the site will be presented to Cabinet in due course.

Cllr Matty Courtliff, the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Property, said the council would take time to work collaboratively with the local community to consider viable options for the site.

He added: “We recognise the importance of the former Highworth golf course to the local community and this administration is committed to listening to our residents.

“We will take the time to consider the options for the site, including how it aligns with the administration’s priorities for green spaces.

“We are committed to meaningfully engaging with local residents, Highworth Town Council and local groups, including the Save Highworth Golf Course campaign group, to help inform future proposals.

“This approach will help ensure that any future plans for the site are taken forward with input from those who live in and care about Highworth.”
