A temporary hosepipe ban has been announced for Thames Water customers.
Announcing the move on its website, the firm insisted it was not a step taken lightly.
Rather, the ban had been announced because of prolonged dry weather and recent heatwaves, very low rainfall levels, higher than normal water demand and forecasts for continued hot, dry weather.
The firm said: "We've been working around the clock to maintain water supplies, but we now need everyone's help to reduce non-essential water use."
The ban applies to customers whose water is supplied by Thames Water. Wastewater-only customers are not affected.
The restrictions apply to hosepipes, sprinklers and pressure washers, but people can still use watering cans, buckets, and water butts.
Thames Water will continue to monitor water levels and conditions across the region. Restrictions will be lifted as soon as conditions allow.
