South Swindon Parish Council Chair Cllr Neil Hopkins writes for the Link
This is our regular report to keep residents informed of the work South Swindon Parish Council has done over the past month and some of the events coming up across the parish.
Our role is to enhance the quality of life in South Swindon by representing residents and managing amenities, green spaces and community initiatives.
First Street Hockey Tournament
On Sunday 16 August, 30 children came to Buckhurst Field for our first South Swindon Street Hockey Tournament.
Four teams competed for the inaugural Buckhurst Cup, with the Walcot Flyers emerging victorious. The tournament culminated the first fortnight of our new Street Hockey programme which is delivered as part of Get Swindon Active and the Active Place Partnership.
The enthusiasm everyone showed was outstanding. It’s brilliant to see youngsters getting active and trying new sports.
Badbury Park Summer Fest
The Badbury Park Summer Fest on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, marked the end of our free summer community events.
Families and friends enjoyed local musicians perform live, community stalls, food and drinks, a craft market, and a fire engine for children.
Providing free entertainment and opportunities for people to come together and enjoy their community is an important part of what we do.
Summer Draws to a Close
Cinema Under the Stars brought the Town Gardens Bowl season to a close in September, with screenings of Disney’s Fantasia and The Wizard of Oz marking the Bowl’s 90th anniversary.
It was a fitting end to a summer that saw thousands enjoy live music, theatre, and family entertainment.
Meanwhile, our gardening and maintenance teams designed and built a new wooden retainer around the sycamore tree outside the Town Gardens café. It replaces the old structure and provides additional seating for visitors.
Oakfield Play Area
We have recently taken over management of Oakfield Play Area and its outdoor gym.
As part of the transfer, Nationwide provided £175,000 for the long-term management of the facilities, plus £33,500 for outstanding renovations.
We are now substantially refurbishing the outdoor gym, work began on 14 September, and will replace dead trees around the site later this year.
