Work on the new Wroughton Community Garden with play equipment, started on Monday, 5 September and the site is currently locked off whilst construction is in progress.

A spokesperson from the Wroughton Parish Council said: "This hidden gem of a play area has needed attention for some time. Our design brief was for an eco-friendly garden with native tree, plant and edible species which also included some sustainable hard wood play equipment.

"We want this to be a place where people can enjoy the outdoors, relax on a bench and take their children or grandchildren to play."

The team constructing the new play area are working on a six-week timescale for the groundwork, path and play equipment to be installed, and the parish council will look to complete its planting during the winter dormancy period of January – March.

The council's spokesperson added: "We would really like to invite local residents to help with the planting so watch this space for more details of a community engagement day.  If any local organisations might be interested in helping us make some bug hotels, please contact [email protected]."

Swindon Borough Council are said to have made a donation towards the play equipment and the organisation will also be sponsoring the garden's planting scheme.

Local estate agents Richard James will also be funding two of the new garden benches.

Members of the public will be able to find the garden site tucked away behind some houses on Maskeleyne Way and Boness Road.

Wroughton Parish Council Community Projects and Grants Officer, Amanda Woodhead, said of the play area's progress: "We are pleased that the work on our secret garden play area is on track with the paths being tarmacked, and play equipment being installed next week.

"We are working with a local specialist to devise a native planting scheme which will include orchard trees, wildflowers and native bulbs."

The parish council have also shared a link to the virtual walkthrough put together by its play equipment provider, Kompan: https://quoteit-api.kompan.com/api/plannerSolution/accessWalkthrough/?SolutionID=4817d79383534fdcbaa54a8d9759a31c
