Young people from low-income families can now apply for financial support to help them access higher education thanks to Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation.

The foundation has opened applications for its University Bursary Programme.
The programme offers eligible students under the age of 25 £1,900 per academic year, helping to bridge the gap between the maximum student loan available and what families can afford to contribute.
Bursaries are designed to ease financial pressure so students can focus fully on their studies.
Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation Grants Manager Nicola Hillier said: “These bursaries provide essential financial support at a time when many young people are questioning whether higher education is affordable.
"By easing financial pressure, we can help students focus on their studies and pursue the courses they are passionate about.
“We would encourage all eligible young people to apply. If you have any questions about the application process or your eligibility, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, our grants team is happy to offer guidance and support with your application.”
Now in its 17th year, the programme has supported hundreds of local young people since launching in 2008. Last year alone, 79 students received bursaries totalling £400,000, with the majority reporting reduced stress and improved ability to focus on their education.
The foundation says the need for this support remains high. According to the National Student Accommodation Survey 2025, average student rent in the UK now stands at £563 per month, with 36 percent of students considering dropping out due to rent costs.
The National Student Money Survey 2025 also found that maintenance loans typically fall short of covering living expenses by around £502 per month.
University bursaries can be used to support essential living costs, travel, course-related expenses, and books or equipment.
The programme is open to young people aged 17–24 living in Wiltshire or Swindon who meet the eligibility criteria, including those from households receiving two elements of Universal Credit or young people who are in the care of Wiltshire Council or Swindon Borough Council.
Applications for the University Bursary Programme close at 5pm on Friday 10 April.
