Swindon Borough Council’s automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras are set to be formally switched on Monday 2 November.
The plan is subject to satisfactory completion of final checks.
The council says the necessary policy changes which govern the cameras' use have now been approved through a Cabinet Member decision note, clearing the way for the road safety monitoring pilot to begin operating.
The cameras will collect information about vehicle speeds and traffic patterns, helping the Council to better understand residents’ concerns and identify where road safety measures could make a difference.
Cllr Nick Gardiner, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “Residents regularly raise concerns with me about speeding and safety on their roads, and I understand the frustration that these cameras have taken time to get up and running. I have wanted to see this move forward too.
“We needed to complete the policy work required for their use, and that has now been approved. I’m pleased to confirm that the cameras are being calibrated this week, ready to be switched on next week.
“This pilot will help us build a clearer picture of vehicle speeds and traffic patterns, giving us better evidence to guide decisions about road safety improvements.
“Getting the cameras operating is an important step forward. Our focus now is on using the information they provide to help make Swindon’s roads safer.”
